I cannot believe Summer went by fast. I can't wait to see all of the trees turning orange, yellow and red. My inspiration to write more poetry is Fall and Winter. Has anyone have any great stories to tell? Have you ever wanted to write a poem that is really two poems in one? I have done so several times. It makes the poem more interesting. I have done this with the poem in our book "Painted Face Under the Midnight Moon."
Don't have the book yet, It is a great book to curl up and drink tea or coffee. Have a wonderful weekend Riley B
I have a closeness with Nature and especially with BIRDS. I do not know why-- it just happens. My close friends know my bird stories that actually happened in the past. I have a new one to tell that happened a month ago.
One morning, I decided it was time that most of the rainy weather was about to simmer down. I pulled out the humming bird feeder, and cleaned it, and filled it with homemade humming bird fuel, and added red food coloring. I call it "fuel" it makes them run on high octane SUGAR! Then once I put it up that night it rained. I thought great now it is going to be watery. So, I waited a few days , and no Birds. So, I took it down and it rained a few more days. I forgot about it, and about two weeks went by. One morning the sun was out, and we had the sliding door open, and the screen door, it was open. I was sitting on the couch enjoying the sun that was shining in. All of a sudden this big humming bird came in the house, just enough to get my attention and my sons attention. The humming bird Yelled and fussed so loudly it was like he or she was screaming at me. The bird was screaming at me for a good minute. I had to look at my son and we both had our mouth open in awe. Then the hummingbird backed up, and flew out of the room. My son and I had to laugh, and instead of enjoying the sun I had to go and fix the humming bird feeder again. I guess a moms day of work is never done.
This time I remember seeing the blue flowers that grow wild up here. So, I decided to be different and added a few drops of blue hummingbird food coloring. Wow, I had the whole neighborhood of hummingbirds the next day. This Mother Nature spring thing has produced a lot of baby hummingbirds of all colors. We get to watch all of them, and yes the big humming bird comes back. They like to humm and they are really saying thank you.
So, put out your hummingbird feeders, these little birds need help, when there are few flowers out there. My hummingbird feeder recipe: depends on the size of your feeder: one part sugar (2/3 cup of sugar) to two parts water, put on stove and warm just to melt the sugar. Let it cool and pour it in your feeder and hang it by a window so you can enjoy watching them. Riley B
Our book is now available for purchase online with Publish America and soon it will be available on Barnes and Noble and other online bookstores. I will list them here in my blog when they show up on their lists. We are so happy to have this book completed and available before Spring is over. I will keep you updated when we have a book signing project coming up.
The style of writing poetry differs from person to person; long or short meters, three or four lines to a stanza. But the great thing is, no matter how a poem is written it still holds great emotion. Some techniques used in poetry are onomatopoeia, alliteration, assonance, rhyming, simile and metaphor.
Onomatopoeia is one of the easiest to learn and use (but not spell). The definition of onomatopoeia is a word imitating a sound. For example; 'buzz', 'moo' and 'beep'. This can be used in a variety of ways giving the reader a 'hands on' feel.
One technique that you might be familiar with is alliteration. This procedure is used by starting three or more words with the same sound. An example of this would be 'The crazy crackling crops.' The three words don't have to have the exact same beginning to have this effect.
The next style is assonance. It is defined as a repetition of vowel sounds within syllables with changing consonants. This is also used in many different circumstances. One would be 'tilting at windmills.' Notice the vowels within each syllable sound the same.
Rhyming is probably the most well-known technique used. However unlike popular belief, it does not need to be within a poem to make it a poem. It is what it is.. a technique.
As for similes, they are often used within poetry. They are an expression that compares one thing to another. A paradigm of this would be 'The milk tasted like pickles.' This method is used in all forms of poetry and generally has the words 'like' or 'as.'
The last but not least style is metaphor. A metaphor is a word or phrase used one way to mean another. Metaphors are sometimes hard to spot and take some thinking to figure out, but they give writers more power to express their thoughts about a certain situation. One famous case where a metaphor is used is within 'The Raven' by Edgar Allen Poe. In fact, not only is it found within the story, the story itself is a metaphor of memory and the constant reminder of the narrator's loss.
These techniques are seen throughout history within both famous and amateur poems alike. To have a full grasp of poetry onomatopoeia, alliteration, assonance, rhyming, simile and metaphor should be household words.
